About Competition

To mark the 50th year, this year’s theme is the “Large Roof House”.
What comes to mind with the words “Large,” “Roof,” and “House,” and what form of architecture is imagined.

The word “Large” should not only be limited to the physical size of the roof but as a metaphor, it can be interpreted as the unity of society or as a large-scale aggregate such as the earth.

The “Roof” is an archetype of architecture, as a shelter from wind, rain, and sunlight, but what does the “Large Roof” protect and what kind of space spreads around it.

Nature, living, daily life, society, relief, being connected……

The hints could be found not just by imagining the world matter or surroundings but also may be hiding in the past literature or even in new technologies.

With minds open, try and spread the ideas without taking the words literally.

Since the first competition was held in 1974, half a century has passed, and the Nisshin Kogyo Architectural Design Competition would like to return once again to the basics of thoughts towards the origin of architecture.

“Large Roof House” connects to the new era.
We look forward to your submissions.

“The architectural space and the given theme, “large roof”, are to be shared no matter race, gender, class, religion, creed, and ideology. It is a symbol of pluralism, a diversity established via architectural methods. You should think concretely about the people who gather in the space and the meaning of the large roof. I look forward to seeing the “large roof house” that gives us a sense of our future.”

Ryue Nishizawa

“What is a roof? There is no question more fundamental to architecture than this and one that provokes various responses. For example, I would say that a roof is a manifestation of the true nature of the flow of water with the help of man. And in what sense can a roof be “large”? Try to find heuristic approaches in various retrospectives.”

Akihisa Hirata

“Taken literally, the given theme “large roof house” reminds us of a house with a magnificent, ornate roof. The slope and height of that roof would be based on various grounds such as lifestyle and site and considering sunlight and rainwater drainage. On the other hand, there must also be small roofs- since the size of a roof depends on the size of the subject. I would say that I will ask you for the small one but full of delusions.”

Yasutaka Yoshimura

“「宇宙」is a Japanese word for universe. both of these Kanji includes「宀」as a component on the top, which means roof. This shows that the Japanese people saw the universe as a gigantic roof within. Even in nowadays, there are many things that we see as such, like a huge mountain range, a symbol of a family-like group, or a tree for shelter from the rain. Although the theme seems to be quite concrete, I would expect you to interpret the theme in wide ways to seek architecture from its origin, to engage us half a century into the future.”

Tatsuya Hatori

“Historically, the “Large roof” was a way to indicate authority in Japan, as you see in religious architecture and such. On the contrary, the size of the roof diminished in the modern era as a challenge, in a way like a flat roof or to be a stacked roof to introduce a small village-like. But these are Physical constraints. For this competition, I would expect discussions beyond.”

Ryuji Fujimura

“The Nisshin Kogyo Architectural Design Competition, which began with the desire to “contribute to the development of architectural culture,” has reached a major milestone in its 50th year. I want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has loved the competition as a gateway to success for architects. We look forward to seeing new ideas related to the “roof” that we are all so familiar with.”
