Excerpt: Primary School in Vila Nova da Barquinha by Aires Mateus is an architecture project featuring a play of volumes that defines each space. The building protects teaching areas by creating a boundary and continuous exterior space. The courtyard serves as a transit system and controlled area. Spaces are defined by volume and height, with neutral white colors. The exterior is designed with the same logic, with openings of equal size.
Project Description

[Text as submitted by architect] The program starts with the creation of a school complex. The facility will also be available for other uses within the community. The program has been extended to the creation of a life-science centre and other functions that will be used independently. This condition meant that these areas needed access from the outside.

The building creates a boundary that protects the teaching areas which, grouped in the center by year group, give rise to a continuous exterior space. The courtyard is an alternative transit system and is also a controlled area. Spaces are characterized by precise volumes of different heights. The program is laid out to allow several uses and circulation paths.

The spaces are defined by their size and are ready to endure life. They are neutral, white. The same logic is applied to the exterior, in the walls and pavements. The openings all have the same size. The project manages in a precise way, very few elements.
