Charlie Hearn is of both British and Chinese heritage, a qualified RIBA architect, and graduate of the famous Bartlett School of Architecture. After decades long of celebrated career, Charlie now leads Inspiral Architecture and Design Studios as a Director. In his role as creative Director he not only manages Inspiral, but also provides guidance, coaching and mentorship to Indonesian practicing architects. Under his tutelage and mentorship, Inspiral has become renowned for producing unique architecture that challenges the way in which our built spaces can expand our own inner nature that inherently creates a deep and vibrant connection to the outer world.
They consist of a group of individualistic and creative architects, engineers, and artisans which has allowed them to realize a number of dynamic buildings and environments throughout South East Asia and beyond. Taking an applied research and design approach they have been able to pursue advanced methods of bio-responsive construction combining SIP technology, prefabrication, lightweight structures, earth building, bamboo expertise, composite eco materials along with polymer and basalt reinforcement in a range of building types of all varieties and scales.
This expertise means they have become highly respected in the region for holistically oriented and ecologically aware architecture in both high-end and public sectors. These diverse skills and achievements have led to their designs being featured in many international publications, being the recipient of major worldwide awards, while at the same time, director Charlie is regularly invited to speak at academic and industry conferences.
Practice Ideology
In physics, the term ‘inspiral’ describes the phenomena of two stars merging together, forming the path of a spiral and radiating incredible amounts of energy in the process.
This process could be an analogy to the formation of how our projects are formed. We find that ourselves and others whether it be clients, visionaries or other professionals gravitate towards one another by sharing a comparative vision and philosophy based on design excellence, environmental concern and a desire to improve the quality of people’s lives. By combining differing backgrounds of East and West, traditional and cutting edge, local and international, the opportunity arises to create architecture which can have a hugely positive impact.
