Practice Ideology

A Threshold, formed in August 2020 in Bangalore, India, is a multidisciplinary design firm with experience in handling residences, institutions, housing, and hospitality projects. It was founded by Avinash Ankalge and Harshith Nayak. The studio’s approach is grounded in the discovery and research of contextually appropriate architecture based on the site, climate, culture of the place, and aspirations of the people.

They believe that the element of nature and surrounding context play a very important role in forming the idea of “place.” Appropriate use of local materials, crafts, and technology binds the overall “form” to the character of its immediate “context.” Their underlying attention in all their work is to respect the context, locally available materials, technology, arts, and crafts, and maximise the use of natural light and ventilation while treating them as valuable resources.

Attempting to foster spaces that give each one a sense of familiarity while still trying to be ingenious, they aim at incorporating people’s aspirations while keeping intact the contextual identity to create a “place of memory.” Studying and documenting various rich vernacular art and architecture inspires them, seeking to bridge the gap between local and global, traditional and modern, to attain timelessness in the built environment.
