Excerpt: JS Apartment, an interior design project by Saransh, primarily features grey marble flooring that transforms the house into a fluid, continuous space, resembling a shallow reflecting pool of water. Inspired by the marble’s reflective properties and subtle veining, the boundaries between the floor and wall were blurred, with the same marble climbing up the walls to create a cohesive and inviting environment.
Project Description

[Text as submitted by architect] JS Apartment is a home designed for a family of four in a multi storey residential building in Ahmedabad. The project is set within an existing space with a canvas made of grey marble flooring. This serves as one of the main foundations for the design process.

This shiny grey element presented an opportunity to enhance the play of natural light within the space and use it as an anchor to bring the space together. Drawing inspiration from the reflective properties of marble and its subtle veining, the attempt is to transform the given built form into a fluid, continuous space, almost reminiscent of a shallow reflecting pool of water. In order to do this, the boundaries between the floor and wall have been blurred by making the same flooring marble climb up the walls.

In contrast to the cool tones of marble, a wood clad enclave is added as a retreat within this large fluid space, offering a warm cocoon. Located in the bright South facing corner of the house, walnut wood infuses warmth and richness and brings a sense of intimacy into the space. Walnut is also incorporated into other elements such as the doors and on the walls as an accent to balance out the marble and white walls.

Apart from materials and tones, the design also integrates a sacred space within the home. The walls in the passage have been brought out at an angle to create a niche that accommodates family’s religious symbols and idols. This subtle architectural move offers a sense of separation and spiritual significance for the temple. These walls have been cladded using white fluted Indian travertine to add texture.
