[Text as submitted by architect] Too often, offices are treated simply as engines of efficiency—functional but impersonal, stripped of the human need for emotional balance and inspiration. Aurora Design’s latest project in Shanghai challenges this notion, redefining the workplace as a cultural and lifestyle setting where productivity and well-being coexist.
Bamboo Essence | A Return to Nature: At the heart of the design lies bamboo, used as the structural spine running through the shared spaces. Sheer drapes, translucent partitions, and Aurora’s innovative suspended glass system evoke the ambience of pavilions and courtyards. Expansive resin glass panels bring dappled bamboo shadows indoors, transforming the office into a living scroll animated by light and movement.
The bamboo is rendered in celadon blue, a tone borrowed from ancient porcelain. Against a foundation of wood and stone, this accent injects vibrancy and youthfulness, softening the work environment and sparking creative energy.
Material Touch | A Calming Atmosphere: Materiality drives the sensory experience. Warm woods, grounded stone, flowing fabrics, and translucent screens shape a workplace that balances physical comfort with psychological ease. Moss and greenery bridge inside and out, creating a studio that feels both enclosed and open—designed to calm the mind, nurture collaboration, and restore focus.
By orchestrating contrasts and harmonies among materials, Aurora Design creates a continuous cycle: daily life inspires work, and work, in turn, enriches life. This dialogue of textures lends the office both warmth and character, redefining efficiency as something inseparable from inspiration.
Focused Rhythm | Balancing Work Modes: One of today’s greatest workplace challenges is the ability to shift effortlessly between focused tasks and collaborative work. Aurora’s strategy responds with a layered spatial sequence: open lounges for exchange, semi-enclosed zones for discussion, and private niches for concentration. Spaces are separated yet connected, enabling both privacy and interaction.
Borrowing from the wisdom of Jiangnan gardens, circulation is designed as a journey—curved pathways and varied perspectives guide movement from focus to collaboration to rest, establishing a natural rhythm. Corners, seats, and outdoor terraces easily convert into restorative retreats, allowing work, reflection, and relaxation to occur side by side.
