Introduction:
Early childhood education is crucial for cognitive development, emotional and social skills, and resilience. However, in rural Sub-Saharan Africa, inadequate childcare facilities pose a threat to children’s educational journey and future community involvement. The challenge lies in creating an architectural model for a nursery school that safeguards and promotes the rights of every child, nurtures their skills, and ignites curiosity about the world. The goal is to help children discover and build their identity, ensuring they can contribute to the community and contribute to their future.
The project: a new nursery school:
The competition seeks an architectural model for a nursery school that promotes children’s well-rounded development by providing a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment. The architecture should support the right to education and well-being by creating ideal psycho-physical conditions. It should integrate play, socialization, and exploration, serving as a focal point for the community. The goal is to inspire trust and serenity in children, families, and the community, creating an inviting, unique, and symbolic environment where every child feels valued and supported in their growth.
The proposal must include the following areas or spaces, which can be developed in one or more architectural blocks at the discretion of the competitor:
- Classrooms: 5 classrooms, each capable of accommodating around 20 children.
- Offices: Spaces for administration and parent meetings.
- Educational play area: Versatile space for playing, creative workshops and physical activities.
- Infirmary: A space dedicated to attending injuries and illnesses.
- Dining area: A space for serving meals.
- Storage: A space for storing educational materials, toys and equipment.
- Toilets: Toilets for both children and school staff.
Project framework: Senegal – Africa
The project aims to design rural areas in southern Senegal, a western Sub-Saharan African country with a population of almost 18 million. The flat territory spans over 200,000 km² and includes the hydrographic left of the river and catchment areas of smaller rivers like the Gambia and Casamance. The territory also extends into the ‘Sahel’, the transition zone between arid Saharan and humid Guinean Africa regions.
