Katerina Valsamaki
Katerina Valsamaki studied architecture at the Architectural Association (AA) School in London, from where she graduated in 1984. Since 1990 she runs her own office-studio in Athens—Katerina Valsamaki Architects, focusing on the study and construction of private projects that include new buildings, refurbishments, and renovations of interior spaces.
Practice Ideology
The Katerina Valsamaki Architects office has been active since 1990 and focuses on the design and construction of private projects, which concern new buildings, renovations, interior design, additions to existing buildings and restorations.
The philosophy of the office is to create spaces that constitute an aesthetic and experiential experience and offer quality of life. The appropriation of the space by the people who inhabit it is what ultimately reveals the invisible structure of the architectural design and is a hallmark of its quality.
The principles that characterize our architecture are simplicity, functionality, timelessness, the equal relationship between the interior and the exterior, the (false) sense of spatial enlargement, the handling of natural and artificial light as a catalyst in space.
Each project constitutes a unique challenge and requires a different approach and handling in relation to its environment and the demands and aspirations of its residents.
The scope of study and design extends to all scales, with an emphasis on detail, from conception to completion of construction.
The office’s works have received distinctions, have participated in Biennales of young architects and architectural exhibitions, and have been published extensively in Greece and abroad in magazines, books and on the internet.
