Project Description

[Text as submitted by architect] Accur8 Diamond Factory: A Coherence of Diverse Functions and Innovation through Technology.
Client Profile: The clients are two young brothers, one leading Accur8 Diamonds Private Limited, a diamond craftsmanship company, and the other heading Responcity Systems Private Limited, a smart city technology company. Both companies aim to house their operations within a single building in the well-established industrial campus of Gems and Jewellery Park in Icchapore, Surat.

Design Vision: The design seeks to make a bold, cohesive statement while addressing site-specific challenges, particularly the west-facing orientation. Given the diverse nature of the companies—one in diamond craftsmanship and the other in technology software—the design emphasizes innovative problem-solving and synergy.
Functional Layout and Orientation: The primary activities are desk-oriented, necessitating an open, well-lit environment. The working areas are oriented towards the landscaped setback areas, providing a visual connection to nature and enhancing the working environment within the industrial park.

Entry Points and Zoning: To accommodate the distinct functions, entries are strategically placed at opposite ends. The northern entrance features an inviting entry through a collaborative café space for executives and visitors, while the southern entrance provides a secure entry for diamond staff. This spatial arrangement ensures functional clarity and security.
Solar Mitigation and Environmental Comfort: The west-facing working area benefits from visual connectivity to the outdoors but is susceptible to harsh afternoon sunlight. A computer-aided sun screen design shades the building, reducing direct sunlight exposure by two-thirds. This significantly impacts air conditioning loads and enhances indoor comfort. The full-sized glass glazing beneath the sun screen offers unobstructed views of the green landscape, promoting well-being and productivity.

Architectural Expression: The building is conceived as a simple cuboidal shell in form-finished concrete, symbolizing unity between the two companies and the brothers. This muted canvas contrasts with the dynamic sun shade, creating ever-changing light and shadow patterns that reflect the innovative ethos of both companies.

Interior Design and Finishes: The interiors are minimalist, allowing the architecture to showcase its large, column-free working spaces. Modular furniture is freely arranged, promoting flexibility. Custom hanging baffles provide dual functionality for lighting and acoustics, enhancing the spacious feel. The floor, finished in honed granite, is durable and minimizes glare from natural light.

Technological Integration: The project demonstrates the transformative impact of technology on building performance, underscoring its benefits for all stakeholders. The design leverages advanced simulations and sustainable practices, ensuring an optimized and comfortable working environment.
