Excerpt: Casa PH2 by TFA – Tagir Fattori Arquitetura is a geometric, monolithic structure that harmonizes with the site’s natural slope. The residence, balancing privacy and openness, features social spaces with courtyards and street-level intimate areas. Strategic subtractions create terraces and gardens, while perforated aluminum screens filter light for privacy, reflecting the city’s industrial character.
Project Description

[Text as submitted by architect] Located in Caxias do Sul, in the Serra Gaucha, in the Montalcino condominium, the PH2 house and its 467.74 m² stands on a plot of 594.56 m². The lot has a small slope in line with the sidewalk and a slope towards the back of the land. These two have already set conditions for the project in addition to the condominium’s internal rules.
The difference in level between the alignment and the bottom of the land is approximately 3.5 meters. The north solar orientation is at the back of the land, very important in a city with few days of sun, extreme variation in humidity, many days covered by clouds and very significant days of rain.
The zoning of the house is organized on two floors, social and intimate. Social at internal courtyard level and intimate at street level. The house appears shy on the land, as if it had been there forever, it barely distorts the natural level of the lot. People have access at both levels. Cars descend to reach the garage. On the first floor at the internal courtyard level are the social living areas, kitchens, laundry room, balcony and swimming pool. On the second floor there are bedrooms, office and terrace. The building was completely oriented towards the north, the main parts open to the courtyard and the sun. Social leisure, bedrooms and a balcony overlook the garden and swimming pool.
The need for privacy was a starting point of the project. Sobriety in the openings and a game of planes and volumes that protect the resident and create a reserved atmosphere. The house is a monolithic block carved and covered by light cladding. It is a rectangular volume over another pure geometric prism. Portions were extracted from the volumes that create spaces for use. Contained terraces, balconies, open balconies, gardens, balcony and garage. These extractions create spaces for ventilation, recreation, contemplation and car shelter. The upper volume, entirely covered in black aluminum, accommodates the roof for the balcony and garage. The monolithic aspect of the house with subtractions and large blind panels create silent facades that are parallel to the ground, forming screens. Black and white screens.
Covered in vertical sheets of aluminum, sometimes perforated and sometimes plated, which serve to protect the vertical masonry panels and as a muxarabi for the upper garden terrace. This hollow screen creates a veil of privacy for residents as well as filtering light and protecting from the wind. It also hides the view of bathroom openings. The cladding evokes the industrial vocation of the city, a metal-mechanical hub.
The openings are positioned in places where they provide light and do not reveal the interior of the residence. Such PVC openings are more generous when related to the garden and swimming pool.
