Excerpt: Madhu’s Residence by Kukke Architects is designed around a central double-height space that acts as the main focus of the house. Layered spaces unfold as one moves through different levels, visually connected through balconies and wooden windows. Light and ventilation are controlled through skylights, vertical wooden louvers, and pivoted windows integrated into a simple concrete façade.
Project Description
[Text as submitted by architect] The house is on 17′-0″ * 40′-0″ site in the heart of South Bengaluru- Basavanagudi with two common walls, and the setback of the neighboring site. The other side faces the road on the west, the only means of light and ventilation.
The entry leads to an enclosed verandah and then to a double height space which is 3′-6″ above road level through a series of layered spaces, which unfolds as you change directions while climbing up the stairs. This double height space, which is shared by living and dining space at different levels, forms the main focus of the house where all other rooms and other spaces look into. This space which is lit by sky light and the vertical wooden lovers for the controlled movement of air, that faces the west. The balcony and the wooden window, which opens to this space, allow visual interaction from different levels.
The opaque pivoted windows placed on top of the central space, with a narrow chimney-like space, will allow light and sun when closed, and block the same when open, with a clear passage for hot air to escape. The daughter’s room itself is in three levels, with one study space and two sleeping spaces. The study, which forms the topmost level of the house, is visually connected to the terrace and to the green sellout in the distance.
The façade of the building is rather simple, with shear walls to support different levels and some to cut the west sun. The wooden louvers, windows, and glass tucked in between these concrete walls are the only means of light and ventilation (other than skylights) for the entire house.
The service areas are placed in the east, which is a dead wall, with ducts and skylights.
The master bedroom is connected to the neighboring terrace, which belongs to the same owner, and is going to be developed into a terrace garden.
