The Ancient Theatre in Ohrid is one of the most representative cultural and historical symbols of the city, whose value as protected cultural heritage is undeniably recognized and accepted by the general public. Following its full integration into contemporary life through restoration and adaptation for use as an open-air summer stage, it has also become one of the main tourist attractions in Ohrid. A retrospective view of the process of uncovering the theatre, which includes a series of archaeological investigations (from 1960 to 2005), testifies to the complexity of the archaeological site, which underwent a process of restoration, after which it was presented to the wider public, opened to visitors, and placed in the service of contemporary needs.
At a time when cities are facing rapid transformations, the question is not only how to preserve heritage, but how to make it an active and integral part of everyday life. ARHRID Collective is pleased to present the final results of an exceptionally specific research and design process that began as student curiosity and evolved into an international dialogue on the treatment of protected cultural heritage. Rather than being understood as an isolated project, this work should be viewed as a multi-year evolution of an idea – from its academic definition, through international verification, to its present-day social and professional contextualization.
Inspired by the in-depth research and results of two initial master’s projects, this event unites an exhibition of competition entries, expert lectures, and a publication into a coherent whole. By documenting this developmental path, the collective’s goal is to open a space for dialogue between architects, institutions, the local community, and the wider public, because the question of integrating cultural heritage into the modern way of life requires an interdisciplinary approach, sensitivity to context, and a readiness for new, sometimes unconventional solutions.
