Site Context

The architectural project is situated at the intersection of Carrera 24 and Calle 39 in Bogotá, Colombia, offering a prime view of the iconic Parkway green corridor. This vital urban space not only enhances the area’s aesthetic appeal but also serves as a key environmental asset, fostering a peaceful and natural setting that benefits the community. The contemporary library seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, leveraging the park’s tranquility and beauty to create an inspiring hub for learning and culture.

Designed to accommodate diverse needs, the building features a multipurpose classroom for community events, a café that encourages social interaction, an exhibition hall to enrich cultural experiences, a children’s reading room to nurture a love for books from an early age, administrative offices, and service areas to ensure smooth operation. This project aspires to be a center of knowledge and culture, complementing and elevating the Parkway green corridor’s landscape.

Design Process

The creative process began with a thorough analysis of the environment and the site’s bioclimatic conditions, recognizing the Parkway as a key element. Various spatial arrangements were explored within the 1,750 m² of constructed area, leading to the development of the building’s main design concept. This concept focused on a circulation system that wraps around the structure, creating dynamic spatial experiences in cross-section while ensuring functionality and accessibility for all users.

Once the optimal iteration was selected, crucial decisions were made regarding the material composition of the envelope, considering the balance between public and private spaces and the site’s unique conditions. Finally, different material options for the envelope were evaluated and proposed to enhance both aesthetics and performance.

Final Outcome

The project culminates in a multifunctional library at the intersection of Carrera 24 and Calle 39 in Bogotá, Colombia, designed to enhance the community’s cultural and educational experiences while seamlessly integrating with the Parkway green corridor. Spanning 1,750 m², the library accommodates a variety of spaces, including a general library, a children’s reading area, a multipurpose room, an exhibition hall, a café, and administrative offices.

Its design revolves around an enveloping circulation concept, fostering dynamic spatial interactions in both plan and section, with a strong emphasis on user experience. A key feature of the building is its double-skin envelope, which functions as both façade and ceiling, ensuring visual continuity and practical efficiency. 

The choice of materials and spatial configuration responds to the site’s bioclimatic conditions and urban surroundings, reinforcing the Parkway’s tranquil atmosphere. This library aspires to become a cultural landmark, promoting learning, creativity, and community engagement.

Conclusion: This multifunctional library serves as a cultural and educational hub, seamlessly integrating with the Parkway green corridor. Its dynamic circulation, bioclimatic design, and versatile spaces foster learning, creativity, and community engagement.
