Excerpt: ‘BIBLIOTECA DE LA MILLE SQUAME’ is a Bachelors Design Project by Simón Tovar Rodriguez from the ‘Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño – Universidad de los Andes.’ The project envisions a multifunctional library that serves as a cultural and educational hub, seamlessly integrating with the Parkway green corridor. The concept is centered around a fluid circulation system for dynamic interaction, ensuring an engaging user experience with a double-skin envelope providing visual continuity and functionality.
Introduction: The project envisions a versatile library that combines multiple functions, including children’s reading spaces, a multipurpose room, an exhibition area, a café, a general library, and administrative offices. Its core concept revolves around a fluid circulation system that encourages dynamic interaction with the spaces, ensuring an engaging user experience both horizontally and vertically. A key design element is the double-skin envelope, which serves as both a façade and ceiling, creating a seamless visual and functional integration throughout the structure.

Design Process
Enveloping ConceptCirculation Diagram
The creative process began with a thorough analysis of the environment and the site’s bioclimatic conditions, recognizing the Parkway as a key element. Various spatial arrangements were explored within the 1,750 m² of constructed area, leading to the development of the building’s main design concept. This concept focused on a circulation system that wraps around the structure, creating dynamic spatial experiences in cross-section while ensuring functionality and accessibility for all users.

Once the optimal iteration was selected, crucial decisions were made regarding the material composition of the envelope, considering the balance between public and private spaces and the site’s unique conditions. Finally, different material options for the envelope were evaluated and proposed to enhance both aesthetics and performance.
