Luo Yujie
Luo Yujie had been the director at BIAD-1A1 Creative Center since 2007. In 2015, he started working in China New Rural Planning and Design Institute, where he founded and steered the Sustainable Rural Construction Studio. In 2017, he set up his own architecture practice LUO studio.
Luo Yujie and his studio have been invited to many exhibitions at home and abroad, such as the “Beyond Architecture” Exhibition in Venice, the itinerant exhibitions of Today Art Museum and CBC Architecture Museum, and the “Unknown City” Chinese Contemporary Architectural Installation Art Exhibition. The studio’s design works have won plenty of design awards, including but not limited to Design That Educates Awards 2021 (Winner), Architecture China Award 2020 (Exploration Award in Technology), WA City Regeneration Award 2020 (Winner), Wood Design & Building Awards 2020 (Honor), A + Awards 2020 (Project of the Year), Dezeen Awards 2020 (Rebirth Project 2020), WAN Awards 2019 (“Wood in Architecture” Gold Winner), and ABB LEAF AWARDS 2019 (“Best Achievement in Environmental Performance” Winner).
Luo Yujie has been invited to deliver lectures at Universidad de Buenos Aires, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Hunan University, CUBE STATION and other colleges and institutes worldwide. His design works and articles have been published on lots of domestic and overseas magazines, like Architectural Review, AV Monographs, A+U, World Architecture, Time + Architecture, Architectural Practice, and more. He was invited as a speaker at the “Q Village” Seminar and a mentor of the 3rd International Construction Competition, and has participated in many events such as the Wood Construction Salon at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
His major works include Children’s House in Dong’anshang Village, Timber Bridge in Gulou Waterfront, Youth Entrepreneurship Center in Sange Village, Shu Di Huang Craftsmanship Exhibition Hall, Natural Library in Zheshui Village, etc.
Practice Ideology
LUO studio pays attention to sustainable construction and advocates using minimum materials to create more “universal” space. We insist on applying natural materials to the construction, study and design of wooden buildings that adopt prefabricated steel and wood structures, and work to build a connection with Oriental traditional timber constructions by utilizing local techniques. We explore creative ways to solve some social problems, such as the approaches of reusing temporary buildings to the maximum extent possible. In addition to conventional projects, we’re committed to improving activity and learning spaces for children in backward areas and focus on the innovative reuse of abandoned spaces and materials in urban and rural areas. Moreover, we work to promote the construction of ecological farms and communities based on the “Permaculture” concept, and engage in and initiate workshops on sustainable construction.
