[Text as submitted by architect] As a signature culinary social destination of Shui On Xintiandi, Foodie Social is situated within Dongtaili Xintiandi. This century-old neighborhood has been a vivid crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, a legendary junction woven with stories of discovery and urban life. Where urban renewal meets history, say reawakens the flavors of Shanghai, through a contemporary lens—reimagining the street as an immersive culinary corridor where street vitality and refined taste unfold together.
According to this, a strategy of “Street Collage” is adopted, layering space, material and memory to establish an ongoing dialogue with history. A meandering circulation replaces rigid corridors, evoking the informal rhythm of wandering and chance encounters characteristic of historic neighborhoods. At the center, a community plaza operates as a flexible “event container” where a fabric canopy and red movable frames enable the space to accommodate both everyday dining and cultural programming with equal adaptability.
The design language of “Street Collage” is further articulated through the reinterpretation of existing market elements and the cultivation of a diverse brand ecosystem. Blue vintage awnings are simplified into lightweight red contemporary canopies, activating spatial memory through vibrant color while allowing material variants to respond to different tenants.
The once-rough timber frames are recrafted in teak and elm, retaining the warmth of refined craftsmanship. In parallel, the food hall brings together time-honored local brands and emerging concepts, allowing traditional and innovative tastes to coexist within a clean, contemporary stall typology sustaining the authenticity and vitality of everyday urban life.
