Project Description
[Text as submitted by architect] Located in the heart of the markets area in the north inner city of Dublin, this urban renewal project aims to respect the history of the site, preserve the urban grain of this area of the city and to create a vibrant living quarter.
As part of the project, the Moore Street terrace is to be restored, historic lane ways are to be reactivated and a series of new civic spaces are to be created in the heart of the block. The programme for the project includes housing, business incubation units, shops, a museum, a gallery and a cultural building.
The site has significance for its rich market history as well as its association with the 1916 Rising. Five of the leaders of the provisional government: James Connolly, Pádraig Pearse, Seán Mac Diarmada, Thomas Clarke and Joseph Mary Plunkett occupied the Moore Street terrace with the volunteers during the last days of 1916 Rebellion.
The site is defined as “The most important battlefield site in modern Irish history” by the National Museum.
