[Text as submitted by architect] Set within a larger corporate complex in the heart of Bombay, Office 440 serves as an elevated workspace for the CFO of a distinguished Parsi-led company. Guided by a respect for heritage and an emphasis on employee comfort, the task was to reimagine a small cabin as a refined, sophisticated retreat that balances the gravitas of its occupant with a welcoming ambience.
To bring warmth and personality to a corporate environment often characterised by sterile uniformity, the architects employed a design approach that celebrates the unique structural qualities of the space. The building’s low, column-free beams span across the structure, creating deep undulations that were embraced. Rather than concealing these elements, they crafted a wave-inspired ceiling that integrates cove lighting, adding a dynamic visual rhythm that subtly illuminates the entire office.
The palette for the project is intentionally muted and restrained, allowing the stunning mid-century furniture pieces—treasured items collected by the CFO and his family—to take centre stage. The back shelving, crafted with meticulous woodwork and bison board, offers a modern, earthy aesthetic that harmonises with these heirloom pieces without competing with them. The shelving’s delicate wooden rod details add texture and enhance the natural materials while keeping the overall design clean and uncluttered.
Comfort is paramount in the team’s approach. They carefully considered the flow of light, adding two windows to flood the space with natural light, creating an uplifting atmosphere.
