[Text as submitted by architect] Between solids and voids, Ragam House unfolds as an experiential journey of movement and art: Escaping the urban chaos of Bangalore, Ragam House sings of layered thresholds that unfold gently into a private oasis. Located in the quiet neighbourhood of Chikkanayakanahalli in Bangalore, the residence is an artistic reflection of its inhabitants, a classical dancer and an artist. The client’s artistic sensibilities form the groundwork for the design by emphasising rustic design elements such as warm textures, earthy tones and handcrafted details.
Architecture as Artistic Expression: Ragam House finds its rhythm in spacemaking by translating movement and creativity into space. It is conceived not just as a residence, but as a spatial extension of the client’s creative expression. The spatial planning of the house exemplifies this vision, where the professional spaces are demarcated yet connected to the private spaces, ensuring seamless movement throughout the house.
The ground floor opens into a dance hall and practice space, designed to function as a professional studio while remaining visually and acoustically insulated from the street. The first and second floors house the family’s private quarters with three-bedroom suites, while the terrace contains an artistic studio offering views of the sky and serving as a retreat for creativity.
Connecting Spaces Through Greenery and Light: Building on its artistic expression, the circulation through Ragam House is conceived as an experiential journey, connecting spaces through light and greenery. A central staircase, wrapped around a vertical light well, connects all floors while acting as the spine of the residence.
This void floods the interiors with natural light and facilitates stack ventilation, enhancing comfort and energy efficiency. As one moves from the professional studio to the private quarters, the design unfolds gradually, with layers of space creating moments of pause, reflection, and discovery. This reinforces the experiential quality of movement through the house—an architectural metaphor resonant with the clients’ engagement with dance and performance.
Introducing greenery at a multi-level perspective was paramount to counteract the dense urban fabric of Bangalore. A green corridor wraps around the spaces on the ground level, bringing in plenty of natural light and ventilation. Balconies and green pockets are strategically placed throughout the house to introduce nature indoors and improve the microclimate of the interiors.
The three facades of the house are intentionally treated as relatively closed surfaces, minimising visual intrusion and environmental noise. The final form is one of curated solids and voids that accentuate the layered volumes.
Textures, Tones, and Touch: Artistic flair is rooted in every aspect of Ragam House, and materiality drives home the sensory experience. Locally sourced Jaisalmer stones lend warmth and texture to the space and amplify the rustic yet contemporary Indian aesthetic desired by the clients.
Terracotta cladding and natural finishes invite tactile exploration and highlight the earthy character of the house, while the vibrant accent tones add bursts of energy to the space. The choice of materials not only supports sustainability through local sourcing but also grounds the architecture in a regional context.
