[Text as submitted by architect] Covering 2,450 sqm on the third floor of the Shanghai Automobile Museum, SLT Design’s Realm of Evolution reimagines the Technology Gallery as a spatial narrative where history, the present, and the future converge. Moving beyond linear chronology, the design constructs an immersive three-dimensional field in which the tensions of automotive technology become perceptible through scenario-based storytelling.
Under the themes of Development, Connection, and Evolution, polygonal and geometric visual language unites five thematic zones, transforming the gallery from a neutral container into an active field of experience.
Spatial Sequence: Time as Internal Order: Time becomes the invisible axis of the visitor journey. At the entrance, mirrored stainless-steel rings and circular light bands create forward momentum, marking the transition from everyday space into experiential narrative. As visitors move through the gallery, shifts in scale, rhythm, and atmosphere connect the zones beyond their individual themes, turning circulation itself into a spatial timeline.
Zone 01 – History: The Vertical Axis: Three nested stainless-steel rings, each 2.4 metres in diameter, suspend historic vehicles at varying heights, from Leonardo da Vinci’s self-propelled cart of 1495 to an early hydrogen-powered vehicle from 1804. This vertical composition offers a layered reading of technological evolution. A modular “living archive matrix” expands the historical narrative, while an exploded Volkswagen Polo suspends its body components outward, dissolving the boundary between exhibit and architecture.
Zones 02–04 – Present: Relational Network: The present-day zones focus on energy, intelligence, and connectivity. Pure electric, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell systems are displayed side by side, placing carbon neutrality within a broader technical narrative. AI perception, positioning, and drive-by-wire technologies translate the “software-defined vehicle” into tangible comparisons between mechanical and electronic control.
At the core, a V2X interactive terminal visualises real-time data flows between vehicles, roads, and urban systems. Together, these zones frame contemporary automotive technology as an organic relational network rather than isolated devices.
Zone 05 – Future: Open Boundary: The future zone is shaped by folded lines, polygonal elements, and a geometric lighting ceiling that uses light as a medium of spatial division. The tension between fullness and emptiness becomes a metaphor for a future that remains undefined yet perceptible. Concept cars and a classic red supercar lower the threshold of technical interpretation, inviting visitors to experience evolving automotive aesthetics through form, scale, and atmosphere.
Graphic Guidance: The exhibition layers sensory experience, technical explanation, and professional depth through installations, moving images, graphic panels, and interactive touchscreens. A3/B3 panels provide accessible technical principles, while C1 panels and digital interfaces offer more specialised content, guiding visitors from casual observation to deeper technical engagement.
Modular System: Built on a 1200 × 1200 mm grid, the system integrates display shelves, multimedia screens, vitrines, and A/B/C graphic panels into a flexible design operating system. This modular approach allows content to be updated without rebuilding the space, extending the exhibition’s lifecycle while maintaining visual consistency.
Brand Co-Creation and Future-Proofing: To support long-term evolution, the design establishes protocols for collaborations with automotive brands, design schools, and technology companies. Reserved AR markers, standardised screen dimensions, structured wiring, and flexible circulation enable the gallery to adapt alongside changing automotive technologies, turning joint exhibitions into a repeatable institutional capability.
