About Competition
The Netherlands-based company Vertico has opened applications for the third edition of the Greenfield Residency, an annual program that provides academic institutions with direct access to industrial robotic fabrication technologies.
Hosted at Vertico’s facility in Eindhoven, the residency enables professors, assistant professors, studio supervisors, and research leaders to bring a group of students for a one-week production residency, transforming research concepts into full-scale prototypes using industrial robotic systems.
Bridging Academia and Industry
The Greenfield Residency was established to give universities access to fabrication technologies that are often unavailable in academic environments. By working alongside the Vertico team, participants gain practical experience with industrial robotics while testing their ideas at full scale.
Although Vertico is best known for robotic 3D concrete printing, the residency is not limited to concrete. Applications are welcomed from projects exploring robotic milling, clay printing, hybrid manufacturing, and other experimental fabrication processes that make meaningful use of robotics.
Previous Editions
Since its launch, the Greenfield Residency has welcomed teams from Cairo University, Gebze Technical University & Isik University, German International University in Berlin, and Woodbury University in collaboration with HKS. Projects have explored computational design, ecological systems, bio-receptive structures, and innovative building technologies, demonstrating the broad range of research supported by the program.
What the Residency Includes
One week of production at Vertico’s facility in Eindhoven
Access to industrial robotic fabrication systems
Technical support from the Vertico team
Access to Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper workflows
Development of a full-scale prototype
Who Can Apply?
Applications must be submitted by professors, assistant professors, studio supervisors, or research leaders on behalf of a student group.
Applicants should submit:
– A project proposal (maximum 500 words)
– Preliminary visual material, such as renders, diagrams, sketches, design drawings, material studies, or previous prototypes
The proposal should clearly describe:
– Project concept
– Research objectives
– Technical approach
– Intended use of robotic fabrication
– Important Dates
Application deadline: July 26, 2026
Selection interviews: July 28 – August 7, 2026
Residency: November 2026 (flexible scheduling)
The Greenfield Residency offers academic teams the opportunity to move beyond digital concepts and experience industrial robotic fabrication through the development of a full-scale prototype.
