Naseeb Mehmood
Trained in commercial design and aesthetics at The One Academy in Malaysia, Naseeb, after completing his course, worked under noted firms to gain experience and, in 2009, returned to Calicut, Kerala, to establish his own practice, ‘Quern Design Studio’.
An interdisciplinary practice of design, the practice currently mediates between interior, graphic and architectural design.
The active nature of Naseeb and his practice has led to the catalyst and conception of large-scale urban rejuvenation projects like Gujarathi Street in Calicut; their active spirit is reflected also in the exploration and experimentation with new materials and their combinations.
In addition, Quern’s work reflects their perseverance for sustainable design in several areas, whether it be designs for personal or public spaces. Quern is also involved in collaboration with international practices in the execution of projects.
Practice Ideology
Quern Design Studio draws its name from the ancient stone mill that transforms raw grain into something refined, a reflection of our design philosophy. Every project begins with ideas, aspirations, constraints, and context. Through a process of thoughtful exploration and rigorous design, we shape these raw inputs into spaces that are purposeful, refined, and enduring.
Our work is influenced by the spaces we have experienced throughout our lives, and inspired by architecture, art, graphic design, and diverse creative disciplines. While art informs our thinking, architecture demands responsibility. We believe meaningful design is not driven by aesthetics alone, but by function, context, climate, materiality, and the people who inhabit a space. Every design decision should have a clear rationale.
Rather than applying a predetermined style, we approach each project as an opportunity to develop its own unique design language. We seek to reinterpret familiar ideas, creating solutions that are authentic to their context rather than following trends or repeating formulas.
At Quern Design Studio, we believe architecture and interior design should do more than meet functional needs. They should evoke emotion, enrich everyday experiences, and create a lasting sense of place. Our role is to refine ideas into spaces that are thoughtful, timeless, and deeply connected to the people they serve.
