Cork Oak House, designed by Hugo Pereira Arquitetos, is a single family house on a plot of extraordinary morphological characteristics, which remained almost intact and unchanged. The development of this project took into account the strong relationship with nature, making it an integral part of the house and a key element in the enhancement of interior spatiality. The natural environment and the panorama that is enjoyed were the decisive elements for its construction.

Cube House, designed by RDMA, considers its primary motive to be privacy and is defined by using a layering method to generate high privacy yet an un-massive border. The house area is set by a double-skin wall. Air circulation is maximized by creating openings above the house, generating privacy and resulting in skylights all over the house. As for the massing, the house is shaped as one big mass split by the main stair and one big skylight in the middle of the house as the main air circulation and natural lighting source.

Construction has started on the Pyramid of Tirana, the brutalist monument in the heart of Albania’s capital city. MVRDV’s design will see this crucial heritage building, once the showpiece of Communist dictator Enver Hoxha, dramatically renovated. The concrete structure will be reused, the atrium and its surroundings greened and opened, and a small village of cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms – where Albanian youth will learn various technology subjects for free – will permeate the site, both inside and outside the pyramid itself. The Pyramid is thus expected to become a new hub for Tirana’s cultural life and a carrier for the new generation. “Working on a brutalist monument like the Pyramid is a dream”, says founding partner of MVRDV Winy Maas.

Floating Planes, designed by Compartment S4, is a retail experience design for a jewelry brand defined by a harmonic play of vertical lines and horizontal planes. Slender mild steel bars are used to design the hanging display shelves, display tables, stools, chairs and even the waiting bench. The olive green walls and tapestry add a certain touch of grandiose and poise to the otherwise populated space. Its composition with all the other elements triggers hidden memories of halcyon days and nostalgia of celebrations that are associated with jewelry in India.

House in Famalicao, designed by Pedro Lima da Costa, Arquitectura, leaned against the north for the best land usage and solar orientation. The spaces are articulated along a structuring corridor that is ended by the main suite. Constructively the house presents 3 dominant materials, ETICS system, stone, and glass. As much as possible, the team kept the house constructively simple so that the articulation between volumes and the shadow plays they drew were the element that characterized the house.

Mazanka Apartment, designed by Sergey Makhno Architects, is a dialogue with the past and is a step towards the originality of modern Ukrainian design and Ukrainian culture as it is. The home interior is eco-housing with natural materials and modern technologies being harmoniously combined, and the design sophisticatedly emphasizes the space’s uniqueness. The designers combined kitchen, living room, and balcony but left a fairly clear thematic division due to different textures and materials. Here, the main beholder of such a force of nature is the Ochi lamp created by Serhii Makhno.

Halaman -The Courtyard House, designed by Zero studio, feels like an escapade to serenity from all the urban commotion. This house is a modern, minimalistic one with original rustic finishes with a lot of greenery inside and personal and intimate spaces, well-lit and ventilated naturally. In extracting the maximum from a fairly complex context, open interior planning played a key role. This resulted in an inward-looking house that essentially opens out as the user enters from the chaos outside; to a large volume that is accentuated with elements such as greenery, natural light, and water.

The Lap Pool House, designed by Aristides Dallas Architects, is inspired by the cavities and ledges of the rocks emerging from the natural landscape as a man-made cave, re-creating spatial points of exposure and introversion. A single slab of concrete, planted so it appears as an extension of the landscape, covers the three building volumes in the Lap pool house and shapes the individual architectural qualities of open and closed space in residence. The building urges the habitant to live with an absolute connection with the scenery of Tinos and with nature.

Harvard Artlab, designed by Barkow Leibinger, is a cross-curriculum space for the arts designed to be curated and adapted by its users. The building, a one-story “pinwheel-like” plan, consists of studios, workshops, and media spaces surrounding a common “Hub” space. The Hub can be opened and closed by four large sliding partitions, enabling performances and exhibitions and cultivating interactivity at the ArtLab’s center. The building, which complies with Massachusetts’ high energy efficiency standards and is projected to be net-zero, is constructed of lightweight steel columns and open web steel trusses on a concrete slab on grade.

MVRDV’s Marble Arch Hill is a temporary installation designed to renew interest in the area as London emerges from the effects of pandemic. MVRDV’s proposal for this installation takes inspiration from the site’s history. MVRDV’s design introduces a park-like landscape of grass and trees and ‘lifts’ this recreated corner of Hyde Park to create a spectacular 25- meter-tall viewpoint that gives visitors an overview of Oxford Street and the park a new perspective on Marble Arch itself.

A Hill Side House, designed by Abramson Architects, is a large home on their dramatically sloping site with an informal layout woven into the topography. The home’s massing is located on a lower level that daylights onto the downslope side of the house. This modest massing arrangement allows neighboring properties to see over the home’s roof. Meticulous craftsmanship and authentic building materials are recurring themes best exemplified by the widespread use of board-formed concrete walls, white oak shiplap cladding, and painted galvanized steel doors and windows.

Designed by Taller David Dana, Camilo Apartment’s selection of materials and furniture broadens the user’s perception, in which lighting is not a separate element but implies the spirit of the space. The fundamental and discreet purity of the materials create a neutral atmosphere of dialogue between all its elements. Perceptible modern notes are created by a mixture of light and translucent elements, the play of these makes the continuity of the materials consistent and rhythmic, attributing elegance, comfort and functionality.

Falaknuma mosque complex, designed by Compartment S4, has ideas that emulate obsolete Muslim architectural elements like carvings, jaalis, brackets, etc. The team interpreted the design with something sensitive to context and material while addressing the issues and religious needs of the targeted users. Light, sound and textures create a sense of place. Old muslim architectural elements are reinterpreted in more subtle contemporary ways, still keeping the core essence of the feeling and experience that they stimulate in people.
