The Iceland Thermal Springs Guest House competition was part of a series of design competitions based on sites around northern Iceland. Participants were tasked with creating an additional guest house for the traditional Vogafjós Farm Resort.
The Shield – Mantory Exclusive, designed by Landmak Architecture, is a showroom to display and introduce the products with the spirit of Mantory. The exterior is shaped as a gently shield, likely melting into the around scene. The language of mechanical design inspired the texture. This work was renovated and converted a functional part consisting of second floors (with balcony) to become exhibit space for Mantory products where we call The Shield.
The Tiing, designed by Nic Brunsdon, is a boutique resort embedded into its local and cultural context as a ‘reward for the intrepid.’ Due to its remote location, the design deliberately leans on traditional materials and construction techniques, while providing a robust conceptual framework. Knowing that concrete is the preferred construction method of Bali, and that bamboo is plentiful, a series of bamboo formed concrete walls were erected on site to create in-between and inside conditions, framing the mountains and the sea.

The House of Courtyards, designed by the architectural firm AndBlack, is a residence organized through a series of open courts. The central open courtyard reinterprets the traditional haveli houses of old city of Ahmedabad, with semi open passage around it. The unique feature is entry court and the central courtyard dense plantations that encourages use of outdoor space. The house alternates between an inward and outward oriented organization with spaces opening inward into the court as well as outward into the front and rear gardens.
Termalija Family Wellness, designed by ENOTA, transforms the spa complex with the solution found in scale and form of surrounding vernacular structures. Viewed from a distance, the shape, colour, and scale of new clustered structure of tetrahedral volumes is a continuation of the cluster of surrounding rural buildings, which visually extends into the heart of the complex. Despite its size and the space it occupies, the new roof simply acts as a big summertime sunshade and does not usurp any of the precious exterior space.
Enota creates a contemporary and critical architectural practice of an open type based on a collective approach to architectural and urban solutions development. Constant changes and new complex situations in the world around us drive them to think about new architectural and urban solutions. To produce answers to those new questions, they believe it’s time to surpass the boundaries of conventional discipline set mainly by our cultural backgrounds.
MICROHOME 2019 design competition was the first of its kind, launched in the hopes of spearheading the Small Scale Architecture Appreciation Movement, which will highlight small projects with big ideas from around the world.
Lluvia, designed by PPAA Pérez Palacios Arquitectos Asociados, is a single family residence with natural vegetation as an important asset. The House is conceived as a solid volume that incorporates subtractions along the main axis; these are formed as small courtyards and double heights depending on the program. The main intention was to merge sections of the main forest-like garden with the interior of the house and let in natural light.
Residence for the Elderly is a housing project designed by the architectural firm Oscar Miguel Ares by generating rooms as small cells. The firm’s approach was held by insistent ideas: provide our elderly with kind environment which promote to be in touch with nature, with the sun, but also enhancing the close relation between inhabitants of the building; the neighborly relations among chairs in the front door of the houses that are so recognizable in the rural areas of Castilla y León.
The Extend House (Refurbishment), designed by Landmak Architecture, has a mixture of architectural features making it as a mini Resort. All elements mix together, between local and contemporary, religion and daily life, privacy and community, the old and the new, the interior and exterior, close and open. And the last is the peaceful atmosphere when host comes home after leaving exciting life outside.
El Porvenir Children Center is an institution designed by the architectural firm Taller sintesis in the municipality of Rionegro, Antioquia. It is a single-level brick building made up of a series of vaulted pavilions. These vaulted pavilions house the classrooms that have a direct link with a series of courtyards. This allows adequate ventilation and lighting but also enables a direct relationship between the children and nature, giving the landscape a permanent presence in the educational spaces and enabling the effective integration of the classrooms with nature.
CLT House, designed by FMD Architects, is a bridge between architectural thinking and sustainable construction methods. The project encompasses a reconfiguration of the existing building as the base with a new upper floor addition that spans the established gardens on the site and re-plans the home with a new central core for this multigenerational family home. Typical daily experiences are elevated beyond ritual to full immersion with nature. Being surrounded by the timber interior brings a constant calm and soothing experience.
Casa W, designed by the architectural firm Oficina Conceito Arquitetura, is a residence located on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul. This residence uses the materials of stone, exposed concrete and wood bring the textures, and the blue and white present in the loose furniture and in the woodwork, complete the scene of this beach house. It has simple volumes and ample of natural light.
MM Office, designed by Michel Macedo Arquitetos, has an open plan and is explored by the addition of a cube in wood and glass. Positioned on the ground floor this cube creates a smooth transition between the street and its interior serve as a meeting space for rest and social gatherings. The upper floor is an open work space that stimulate dialogue, collaborative production and creativity. The final result between full and empty spaces, creates a strong relationship between the new and existing.
Sky House is a residence designed by the architectural firm MIA Design Studio that connects people and nature through layers. These layers become the main subject of the house, where parents and children can see each other from every room. In combination with our desire is the personality of the owner who loves and enjoys inner-peace and calmness. Therefore, the design team was determined to have a clear idea for the architectural plan, which could promote a deep horizontal and vertical connection between human to human and human to nature in this house.
THE COCOON HOUSE – Refurbishment, designed by Landmak Architecture, is reborn, with a new form with an addition of a floor and mezzanine. The advantage of the place is the space at the front and the back of the house, with more nature approaching like garden. The old balconies at both end of the house is skinned with ventilation brick block, inside this skin is the green space for rain, wind and sunlight to shine through.
This workshop concentrates on understanding thermal gain and losses in a building and resolving the issue of overheating of the built-form.
Kodikara House, designed by the architectural firm Lalith Gunadasa, achieves the client’s demand and responds to the site and context. Straight and pure lines, simple forms, wide opening views and huge volumes with lots of natural light characterize this urban house for a young couple with busy lifestyle. The design was conceptualized to a thoughtful puzzle of internal rooms and outdoor gardens that together create the illusion of endless spaces on what is, in reality, in a 14 perch urban plot.
Shenzhen Terraces, designed by MVRDV, is a mixed-use project with sustainability as a focus acting as a new three-dimensional urban living room with more than 20 programs, including a small gallery, library, and outdoor theatre. MVRDV’s Shenzhen Terraces aims to bring vitality and innovation to the area through a seamless integration of landscape, leisure, commerce, and culture. The central concept of Shenzhen Terraces is to merge the existing landscape with the new development by using stacked plateaus for its various buildings.
The Architecture MasterPrize honours designs in the different disciplines of designing fields with the goal of advancing the appreciation of architecture worldwide.
Meditation space for creation, designed by the design studio Jun Murata | JAM, guests are prompted with various light experiences. The designer inserted a white container. A short container, referred to as “closed space”, is connected to the outside of the container used as a guest room.Seasonal scenery ends from the rectangular opening in the east and west. Additionally, natural phenomena that change every moment bring changes inside.
LT Houses, designed by Michel Macedo Arquitetos, is inserted in a growing urban area where the buildings designs are predominantly repeated. The sloping corner allows vehicles to access by private circulation, releasing the main facade for pedestrian access. The post-tensioned structure allows flexible plants, generating possibilities for different arrangements and fulfilling the needs of the market and the families who live there.
The Workshop encourages participants to explore a spectrum of cross disciplinary inspirations in order to evolve a better understanding of these thought processes.
